Dr. Kwabena Donkor, former chief of Ghana’s first Ministry of Power, has expressed his anger at what he terms ‘hate’ on the part of Ghanaians, including his own wife.
The Ministry, which was formed in November 2014 by the President to ‘ensure more stability and security of power’, has been regarded by many Ghanaians as a waste of national resources. One angry owner of a barbering shop had this to say to 2eweboys.com: “Throughout 2015, I always had to hire generator sets to do my work. And we claim we have a Power Minister. Those people don’t even have enough power to discipline their mouths and brains.”
It will be recalled that the former Power Minister in February 2015 promised to resign at the end of the year if the energy crisis was not resolved. In a clandestine move, the ex-minister issued a press statement on 30th December, 2015, to the effect that the power crisis was over. The head of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), William Amuna, quickly came out to give a counter statement that the erratic power situation was not over. It was later discovered that the Minister made the declaration without consulting other stakeholders such as the Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and GRIDCo. The President gave the Minister the option to resign from his post or be sacked. The man resigned a day after, on 1/1/16.
Speaking to us last night, the Minister was very bitter and blamed the Ghanaian populace for making him lose his job. “These people don’t know how to play at all. What is the big deal if someone promises you something and fails? We are all human!” he screamed over the phone.
When we asked him to tell us more, he added that he was even happy to stop serving people who did not know the difference between words like ‘dumsor’ and ‘loadshedding’.
“Ever since I made that promise, even my own wife has hated me. How do I know? Because she is always on my neck to deliver on that promise. And that is how I know that Ghanaians all hate me. Even my former boss is still at post after all his undelivered promises and all and you people are venting your anger on me. I’ve finally resigned. Y’all happy now, right?”
