Rawlings

Former President of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings turned 70 yesterday, Thursday, June 22, 2017. The nation celebrated its longest-serving leader who led Ghana for nineteen years. Two highlights of Mr. Rawlings’ birthday were a night of music, dance and theatre put together by Uncle Ebo Whyte’s Roverman Productions and a surprise gift of a pitch-black, convertible, sporty 1993 Chevy coupé.

The Rawlingses also organised a birthday party for the former revolutionary leader and first president of Ghana’s fourth republic to mark his septuagenarian age, the. The party was attended by all his four children – Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, Kimathi – and his wife Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings. A few close friends and associates of the Rawlingses were invited to the event.

Conspicuously missing at the party were members of the National Democratic Congress. Apart from Zanetor Rawlings who is an MP on the party’s ticket and was only at the event in her capacity as the daughter of the man celebrating his platinum jubilee, not even the close aide of the former president, Kofi Adams, was present.  According to one of the guests who spoke to www.2eweboys.com, the family wanted to keep the event private and not evoke any partisan or political nuances on the day.

“You know, seventy years is not a joke. On a day like this, it is better to be around your family and friends, celebrate the day in as much solitude as possible, do a lot of personal reflection and plan how you will want the rest of the years God will gift you on this earth to go. This is exactly what Papa J wanted to achieve today and that is why the party was not open to a lot of people”, said our informant.

In sharp contrast to the above statement, the former president who is known for being a “boomsayer” did not hesitate to say a wish for the political party he founded. After he blew the candles and cut his big birthday cake carved in the numbers 7 and 0 to signify his age, Mr. Rawlings took the microphone to say a few words.

“… I know usually the birthday celebrant does not say his wishes when he blows the candle but you all know I am not a usual man and I do not do usual things so permit me to tell you one of my wishes on this special occasion”. His audience laughed

“I am grateful for the life I have, for my health and for my wonderful family. I am confident that God will give me many more years to be on this earth. However…”, Mr. Rawlings paused and chuckled. The attendees chuckled too.

“However, one of my greatest wishes is that my party, the NDC, remains in opposition eternally”. His audience laughed loudly at this point.

“Well…”, the former president continued. “May they be in opposition until my lovely daughter here (pointing to Zanetor) decides to take the reins of the party and returns it to the values and principles we built the party on”. This was received by another round of laughter.

We cannot tell if the former military leader was joking or meant his words and our informant refused to comment on this quote. However, given the recent relationship between the party and its founder, Mr. Rawlings could mean his statement. All attempts to get the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketsiah (popularly known as General Mosquito) to comment on the statement has proved futile. Party members who have heard about the birthday wish are agitated as expected but are refraining from saying anything official in the name of the party.

Keep watching this space as we keep you updated on the NDC’s official response to this birthday wish.

www.2eweboys wishes the former president long life and prosperity on this special occasion.
